A relative, who works as a teacher, complained of ‘severe pain in her sitting area’ while attending a relative’s wedding. After checking what it was, I found that he had ‘coccidinia’ problem and was suffering for a long time without sufficient awareness about it. He’s not the only one…many of us would have suffered for days without resolution or clarity from such excruciating pain. That’s why I am writing an awareness article about Coccidinia here.
Coccidinia…
This bone problem, which is medically called ‘Coccydynia’, causes pain in the coccyx, the last bone when we sit, that is, between the two buttocks. Thus, when we sit on a firm floor, it causes pain like ‘win’. Even sitting in luxury seats (i.e., cushioned seats) can cause pain.
The structure of the bones…
Following the brain, the spinal cord extends down like a cord and ends in the lumbar region. Just as the skull protects the brain, small bones go down one after another to protect the spinal cord and end with the pelvic joint. In this, 7 neck bones, 12 back bones, and 5 pelvic bones come under one another. After this, the 5 bones are joined together as if they are glued to each other and the buttocks are located between the two. Its name is ‘Sagaram’. Finally 3 – 5 coccyx bones come together to form an ‘upside down triangle’.
Pain in that last sharp point is what we call coccydynia. Some muscles, muscle fibers and tissues are attached to it. This bone is called ‘Tail Bone’ in English. It is from this bone that the animal’s tail develops. The purpose of the 33 bones in the spinal cord, including the last tail bone, the coccyx, is to bear weight. Coccyx bones mainly support the weight of the body against gravity so that we can sit firmly.
Reasons…
* When we sit with a slouched back for too long we unknowingly put our weight on the coccyx instead of the pelvic bones.
* As the muscles around the coccyx become weak, more pressure is placed on the bone. This constant pressure causes pain.
* Some fall while sitting. Moreover, the bone gets injured and becomes painful.
* Coccyx bone cannot bear more weight in people who are overweight. Hence, pain will arise.
* Sitting for long periods of time and that too on firm ground. For example, sitting on tiles, firm chairs, seats for long periods of time.
Symptoms…
* Can feel extreme pain in tail bone when getting up from sitting position.
* Pain during defecation.
* Feels more pain when sitting cross-legged and less pain when sitting with legs extended.
The information provided by the data…
* Pregnant women who do not exercise suffer from this problem of coccidiosis at least once in the last trimester.
* The problem affects women five times more than men.
* 31 percent have not found the reason why this problem occurs.
Risk factors…
* Because a very lean person has less fat and less muscle density, their body weight falls directly on the bones. Because they are soft and cushiony without supporting muscles and fat, they can easily get pain.
* In obese people, the coccyx bones are not strong enough to support the weight. So it can be painful.
* Can easily come on people who sit for long periods of time. For example, teachers, drivers, IT workers, college students.
* If they have to sit for long periods of time in firm seats every day, they may experience pain. For example, since our urban train seats are hard, a person who travels for more than two hours daily may experience this pain.
* Boaters may experience this pain as they have to constantly move their body before and after cycling for longer periods of time. Of these two, athletes are more likely to develop coccidiosis.
* Pregnant women secrete a hormone called ‘Relaxin’ to make pelvic bones easier for delivery. This can cause pain as the tailbone becomes lighter. Also increases weight in the stomach. Pain is more likely to occur in the last trimester.
Find out…
No special tests are required for this. Since one can feel the symptoms mentioned above very well, and there is often no other reason for the pain, we can confirm this at home as coccidiosis. Then you can consult a doctor.
Solutions…
If there is a lot of pain, the orthopedic doctor will give medicine and tablets only for certain days. But since it is not a permanent solution and has side effects, it is better to visit the nearest chiropractor to find a solution. Pain can be controlled by muscle relaxation and strength exercises. They can also prevent pain from coming. Through the use of conventional medical equipment, they will also help reduce pain. Apart from these, some suggestions will be given to follow at home. For example…
* Pour warm water in a wide vessel or a vessel sold for this purpose and let it sit for ten to fifteen minutes.
This will reduce the pain easily.
* A pillow in the shape of English letter ‘C’ is available for this.
We can put it in all the places where we sit and sit on it. This prevents the bone from going to the floor and causing pain. Also protects from deterioration.
In ten to fifteen days the pain subsides and complete recovery is possible. But for a person who has been in pain for a long time, it may take some time for the pain to subside completely.
Let’s save before coming…
* People who are in occupations that require sitting for long periods of time can consult a regular doctor and get proper exercises and
advice and follow them before pain occurs.
* It is good for both categories of overweight and underweight people to take proper exercise beforehand.
* Pregnant women can do regular exercises as per doctor’s guidance since conception.
* People who have a lot of fat around the stomach (belly) can exercise beforehand. In general, this coccidiosis problem, which starts with a small pain and causes a lot of pain, can be solved very easily at the beginning with the help of a doctor.
