Many types of diseases that we have not heard of and cannot understand occur to many people from time to time. A fatty tumor called lipoma belongs to that category. It is formed in the hands, feet, shoulders, back, etc. in the body as one or ten or twenty small lumps without pain. Why are these fatty deposits formed? General Practitioner, Amilthan shares with us what kind of effects it causes:
What is a fatty tumor? It usually grows between the skin and muscle; Grows very, very slowly; Soft and rounded; It is also movable when touched by hand. There is no pain even if you press hard. Fatty lumps can appear anywhere on the body.
However, they are more common in the neck, back, abdomen, thighs, arms, and shoulders. A person may develop only one tumor or multiple tumors at the same time. The exact, clear cause of fatty tumor growth has not been confirmed till date. However, it is considered a hereditary disease. For example, if the grandfather or father has it, the son is also likely to get it. Otherwise anyone can come. Studies show that eating a high-fat diet, obesity, diabetes, and alcohol consumption can trigger the development of cysts.
What are the effects of obesity?
A fatty tumor does not cause much damage. Some people have 10, 20 to even 100 lumps in their body. If these tumors are small, there is no harm. If it grows a little too big or grows on the side of the nerve, it can cause pain when it presses on the nerve. Only painful tumors need treatment. Painless lumps need not be feared.
As such, fatty lumps never turn into abscesses. Similarly, fatty tumors do not turn into cancerous tumors. So there is no need to fear. At the same time, if the tumor suddenly grows rapidly, changes its shape, hurts, changes the color of the skin above the tumor, invades the body, or forms a nodule in the area near the tumor, medical advice should be sought immediately. It should be checked whether it is a cancerous tumor or not and treated accordingly.
Sometimes this fatty tumor grows in the spinal cord. If it grows like that, it can affect the leg. Therefore, it is better to surgically remove tumors growing in the spinal cord. Sometimes a fat lump grows inside the meatus. The lumps are very painful. Such tumors can also be surgically removed.
How many types of fat are there?
There are generally two types of fat. One is encapsulated lipoma and the other is diffuse lipoma.
An encapsulated lipoma is a sac-like lump around the fat. It is cylindrical to the touch.
A diffuse lipoma is very large to the touch. The nodes around it seem to spread immeasurably.
There are different types of fat depending on where it comes from. If someone has it just below the skin, we call it a subcutaneous lipoma.
Or if it is in the flesh, we will say intra muscular lipoma. Some are in the spinal cord. Let’s call it intra spinal lipoma. Some fatty deposits even form in the brain. There are many different types of lipids.
Are brain tumors dangerous?
A fatty tumor in the brain is a little dangerous. Early detection and surgical removal is best. Or it can eventually make the body tired and weak and cause many problems. What are the symptoms of liposuction? Anyone can get it. Liposuction can happen to anyone.
As mentioned in the beginning, it is a genetic disease. If grandfather and father have it, son has 100 percent chance of getting it. Otherwise it can come to anyone. Around 15 – 20 years of age, these fat cells start to appear. Some tumors grow slowly. Some tumors do not grow. The type of tumor should be investigated and treatment should be taken if necessary.
Otherwise there are many studies to find out the causes of these fatty deposits. Research done on animals (dogs) suggests that a diet high in preservatives comes from eating a lot of packaged foods. But no direct human studies have yet been conducted.
Method of treatment
The only option is surgical removal of tumors that occur in the spinal cord or brain. Some people have many small lumps in one place. If they are surgically removed, there is a chance of skin damage. For this reason, removal by injection is now practiced. Fat deposits can be dissolved with an injection called lipolysis.
Once the treatment is done, there is very little chance of recurrence of the tumor in the same place. But, it can re-emerge elsewhere. Similarly, there is no relation between body fat and obesity.
Diet: Some people claim that eating fish oil pills, which are high in omega-3 fats, can help melt away fat. Some people also say that eating turmeric reduces the size of the tumor slightly. But none of these have been scientifically investigated and reported. Are the lumps in the armpits in many teenage girls a type of fatty tumor?
No. Many people mistake it for fat. It is not fat. When small lumps appear on the face, we call them pimples, and this is the same. It depends on the type of pimple. If it occurs in the armpit, we call it hidradenitis suppurativa. Waxing or shaving the underarm area improperly can cause lumps like this. If you dream about it, there is no chance of tumors. Similarly, the underarm area should always be kept clean. These types of tumors can also dissolve with medication if treated while they are still small. If it grows, it can be removed by surgery.
